Introduction

The School of Dentistry offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent). The DClinDent program may be undertaken by coursework which leads to specialist registration.

Candidates in the DClinDent programs undertake courses at the School of Dentistry which is situated in Turbot Street in the City of Brisbane.  These facilities are also available for clinical and research work.

Opportunities Open to DClinDent Graduates

Specialty Practice
Graduates with DClinDent degrees may apply for registration as specialists. (In Australia, this applies only to graduates who have completed their primary dental (Bachelor’s) degree in Australia or New Zealand.)

Research
Opportunities are available for graduates wishing to further their research careers at universities or postgraduate institutes in Australia and overseas.

Teaching
Graduates with postgraduate experience and research higher degrees may apply for permanent lectureships which become available from time to time. Temporary lectureships are occasionally available and may be offered to graduates who intend studying for research higher degrees.

Requirements for Students at the School of Dentistry

Candidates seeking admission into graduate courses are required to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Science from The University of Queensland or a degree in Dentistry from another university which is considered to be at least equivalent in standard. Candidates for the DClinDent program should also have achieved honours or equivalent and have a minimum of 2 years of graduate clinical experience prior to commencement. An MBBS or equivalent degree registerable in Queensland is also required for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialty training.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit for the IELTS test and meet the specified standard.  A minimum overall score of 7 is required with an individual writing band score of 6 or better and a score of 7 in speaking. Information regarding IELTS may be obtained from the following offices: Australian Education Centres, British Council, IDP Education Australia, and Australian embassies.  The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results are not accepted.

The DClinDent Program of Study

A DClinDent program involves not less than 48 units taken over a period of at least 3 years (6 semesters) of full-time study. Classes commence formally in mid January each year. However, some disciplines may require students to undertake extensive oritentation activities prior to commencement, in preparation for the academic year and clinical training.

The content of each program of study varies depending on the specialty chosen by the candidate. A candidate proceeding to the DClinDent degree pursues a course of study which includes: (a) basic science subjects; (b) a field of dental science selected by the candidate which may include one or more courses set out in the Schedule; and (c) a research project and report. At the completion of the program, a final examination will be conducted.

Candidates attend seminars, tutorials, practical classes, courses, clinical work and other relevant programs. Candidates also prepare a cumulative log summarising the practical work performed in the principal field of study for presentation to the examiners if requested at the interim and final examinations. A common feature of all DClinDent programs is a research project occupying about 30% of total program time. This project may be a new and independent one or be a discrete part of an existing research program.

Specialist Areas Available for Study

Specialist programs may be available in the following areas:

The number of DClinDent coursework candidates able to be accepted each year in the various fields of Dentistry is limited, being dependent upon the availability of teaching staff and resources.

Each applicant shall supply certified documentary evidence of academic records and the names of two referees to support the application. The referees chosen should be capable of making an evaluation of the ability of the candidate to pursue the proposed field of study and research.

The University's international postgraduate prospectus is available on the UQ International website.

Selection of Candidates

The selection of DClinDent coursework candidates takes place during May and June. Under normal circumstances, applicants may expect to receive advice on the outcome of their application in July. Selection is highly competitive and is based on academic records, experience since graduation and referees' reports.

As part of the selection procedure, an overseas trained applicant may be required to complete a clinical assessment program. This is a one-week program designed to assess clinical competency that is conducted by the School of Dentistry and involves an examination fee.

The assessment fee is refunded to successful applicants through reduced payment of tuition fees.

The assessment programme will be coordinated by the potential academic coordinator, and the structrure of the assessment is dependent on the discipline which the applicant wishes to study. The assessment will normally be held in June/July each year and will consist of the following: written examination, objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), practical examination and oral examination.

Please note that the assessment program is used by the School of Dentistry for further consideration of an application if deemed necessary and is not compulsory for all applicants.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees must be paid in full, one semester in advance. For the first semester of study the fee must be paid by the date specified in the letter offering a place. For remaining semesters, the fee is to be paid no later than the commencement of classes.

The University of Queenslad has provided an online calculator to enable you to obtain an estimate of the fees you will be charged for your studies.

Overseas candidates may obtain further information at: http://www.uq.edu.au/international.
