FAQs BOralH
What subjects do I need to study at secondary school to apply for entry into the BOralH program?
Applicants must have completed the following minimum subject prerequisites (Year 12 equivalent):
• English (4, SA)
• Biological Science (4, SA)
What is the cut-off for entry into Oral Health?
The cut-offs for entry will vary each year according to the standard of applicants. However as a guide, the major round cut-off for entry into the BOralH program in 2012 was Entry Rank 98 (OP 2/GPA 5.5 Group I tertiary institution*/GPA 6 Group II tertiary institution**) for a Commonwealth Supported place. The cut-off for international entry in 2012 was Entry Rank 95.
*Group I tertiary institutions (Group of Eight research-intensive universities) include University of Queensland, University of Sydney, University of NSW, Australian National University (ANU), University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Adelaide, University of Western Australian.
**Group II tertiary institutions in Queensland include Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Griffith University, James Cook University, University of Southern Queensland, University of Sunshine Coast, University of Central Queensland, Australian Catholic University. Contact UQ Admissions for other Group II institutions.
Is there any special consideration for mature-age applicants?
There is no special consideration or sub-quota for mature-age entry. Selection is based on academic performance only.
I have worked for a number of years as a dental assistant. Does this increase my chances of entry?
There is no special entry or sub-quota for dental assistants. Such applicants will be required to meet all entry requirements and will be assessed in competition with other applicants according to the selection process. Please note that completion of a dental assisting certificate is not sufficient to meet the Biological Science prerequisite for entry.
If I complete courses in another tertiary program, can I receive credit for them in the BOralH program?
Courses completed in another tertiary program may be considered for credit transfer, only where such courses can be demonstrated (e.g. from their detailed course profile) to be equivalent in content and workload to those courses in the BOralH program. However, prospective students should always plan their first year enrolment so that they complete courses which give acceptable options for further study in their present degree program. This allows them to continue a study plan for other future careers in the event of failure to gain entry into the BOralH.
I completed the first year of an Oral Health/Dental Hygiene program at another university. Can I transfer and enter directly into second year?
Oral Health students from other Australian universities seeking entry into the BOralH program must apply through QTAC for a quota place. Such students must meet all entry requirements and will be assessed in competition with other applicants according to the selection procedures. If accepted, applications for credit transfer will then be considered.
I completed a Dental Hygiene program at another university. Can I complete just one or two years of the BOralH program to obtain the degree?
The areas of dental hygiene and dental therapy have been integrated into single courses (Oral Health Therapy) in the BOralH program and therefore it is not possible to separate them. Such students would therefore be required to complete all clinical requirements as well as all other relevant courses in the program.
If I am accepted into the BOralH program, will this enable me to gain automatic entry into Dentistry?
There is no direct entry for BOralH students seeking admission into the BDSc program. Such students will be required to apply normally through QTAC and meet all entry requirements for admission into the BDSc. They will be assessed in competition with other applicants according to the selection procedures for the BDSc program.
Can I defer my BOralH offer?
Applicants may apply for deferment. To request deferment, applicants need to select the deferment option when responding to their QTAC offer.
Can I undertake the program part-time?
The BOralH program is a three year full-time program and students are required to complete all compulsory courses as indicated in the BOralH course list.
How much does the Oral Health program cost? What are the fees?
For Commonwealth Supported students, the student contribution fee in 2012 is approximately $9,000 per year. It is anticipated that the contribution fee will be similar in 2013.
What should I do if I am unsuccessful in gaining entry into the BOralH program?
Students may be unsuccessful in gaining entry into the BOralH program for the following reasons: (i) they did not complete the prerequisite subjects (or their equivalent) at high school; or (ii) they did not achieve an entry score (called a rank) above the cut-off to be competitive.
If an applicant did not complete the necessary prerequisite subjects at high school, they may consider undertaking senior high school subjects either externally or though their local TAFE institution. Alternatively, they may enrol at a tertiary institution in another program (i.e BHlthSc, BSc) and complete courses which will satisfy the missing prerequisite requirements.
If an applicant did not achieve sufficiently high secondary school results then they may consider undertaking one full year (equivalent to 16 units of study) of university study in another program (i.e. BHlthSc, BSc) in an attempt to upgrade their entry rank.
