How long will I have to wait?
How long will I have to wait?
First you need an appointment for a full examination which run throughout the year. Contact us to register yourself on our patient management database and an appointment can be made. Once you have undergone an initial examination, waiting times for actual treatment in a student clinic can be discussed with the Clinic Treatment Coordinator. Waiting times vary per clinic. Please note we do not offer emergency clinics to the general public. If you need to see a dentist urgently please refer to your phone book for community dental clinics or private carers.
Who will treat me?
Undergraduate students provide the treatment in most cases. All clinical work is supervised by registered dentists or dental specialists who have an academic appointment with the University. We draw our experts from private practice and government clinics. In some specialty clinics the treatment is provided by postgraduate students.
What does it mean to be treated by a student?
The clinics are a teaching environment and our professionals-in-training may need to take a little longer than an experienced professional. We are focussed on providing the highest standard of care to our patients. All clinical work by students is checked and approved by the academic dental professional in charge.
How much does it cost?
Our fees recognise that services are provided by professionals-in-training. This means our fees are less than those in private practice. For undergraduate treatment, set fees apply for the initial examination and routine visits. Complex procedures which involve multiple visits and laboratory work such as endodontics (root canal treatment), crowns and bridges, dentures and related items include a fee that recognises the costs in ordering the appliances and paying laboratories.
How can I pay?
You can pay by cash, EFTPOS or credit card (Visa and MasterCard - in person only).
Can I claim any costs back?
Treatments provided by undergraduate students at the School do not attract a rebate from Medicare or private health insurance funds. Some of the postgraduate dental treatments may attract a rebate but this will be at the general dentist rate, not the specialist rate (our postgraduate students are qualified general dentists in training to become specialists.) If you are being seen in the Private Dental Practice within the School then please contact the Business Coordinator for an update as our systems are currently being upgraded to accept and process private healthcare cards.
